About SKATECUBE KIDS

We're a nonprofit organization using skateboarding and creativity to support youth development in our community.

Why SKATECUBE KIDS Was Created

SKATECUBE KIDS was founded on a simple observation: young people need opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging—but not all traditional programs work for every child.

Many young people who struggle in conventional sports or academic settings thrive when given alternative ways to learn and grow. Skateboarding offers a unique environment where progress is self-defined, creativity is encouraged, and there's no scoreboard measuring success.

Youth practicing skateboarding skills in supportive community environment

We created SKATECUBE KIDS to provide young people with access to this type of developmental experience. Our programs are designed to support the whole person—physically, socially, emotionally, and creatively.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we're committed to making these opportunities available to youth in our community regardless of their background or previous experience.

A Message from the SkateCube Kids Founder

JoJo - Founder of SkateCube Kids

Hi, I'm JoJo, founder of SkateCube Kids.

I've lived in Thailand for years as a teacher and skateboarder, spending my days in classrooms and my free time at skateparks across Bangkok. Along the way, I saw how powerful skateboarding can be for kids — not just as a sport, but as a way to build confidence, resilience, and real connection.

As a teacher, I watched kids grow when they felt supported. As a skateboarder, I saw how a simple board could open doors to friendship, creativity, and self-belief. In Thailand, I met so many kids who wanted to skate but didn't have access to boards, safe spaces, or encouragement.

That's why I started SkateCube Kids — to give back to the community that gave me so much.

"My mission is simple: to put a skateboard into the hands of every Thai kid who wants one."

SkateCube Kids is about more than skating. It's about belonging, joy, and growing together — on and off the board.

See you at the skatepark. 🛹💛

The Connection Between Skateboarding and Youth Development

Young person building confidence through skateboarding practice

Natural Resilience Building

Research in youth development identifies resilience—the ability to bounce back from setbacks—as one of the most important factors in young people's long-term success and wellbeing. Skateboarding naturally teaches this skill.

When learning to skateboard, falling is inevitable. But in the right environment, young people learn to view these falls as feedback rather than failure. They develop the understanding that progress requires persistence and that temporary setbacks don't define their abilities.

Self-Paced Learning

Unlike team sports where young people must keep pace with others, skateboarding allows each person to progress according to their own timeline. There's no pressure to perform at a certain level or reach specific milestones by a certain age.

This self-paced nature creates intrinsic motivation. Young people skate because they want to improve, not because they're competing with others. This type of motivation is associated with deeper learning and longer-lasting engagement.

Goal-Setting and Achievement

Skateboarding provides clear, achievable goals at every level. A beginner might work toward simply balancing on the board. An intermediate skater might focus on landing a specific trick. These goals are concrete and provide immediate feedback.

The process of setting goals, working toward them, and experiencing success builds self-efficacy—the belief that one can accomplish what one sets out to do. This belief transfers to other areas of life, including academics and social relationships.

How Creativity and Movement Support Growth

Physical Activity and Brain Development

Physical activity doesn't just build strong bodies—it supports brain development and mental health. Research shows that regular movement improves focus, reduces anxiety, and supports emotional regulation in young people.

Skateboarding specifically builds coordination, balance, and spatial awareness while providing aerobic exercise. The physical challenges create opportunities for young people to develop body confidence and learn to trust their physical capabilities.

Creative Expression and Identity

Skateboarding is inherently creative. There's no rulebook dictating the "correct" way to approach a ramp or execute a trick. Young people develop their own style, learn to make choices about how they want to move, and express their personality through their skating.

This creative freedom supports identity development. Young people learn to trust their instincts, develop preferences, and gain confidence in their unique way of doing things. When we add structured creative activities like board design and art projects, we provide additional avenues for self-expression.

The Mind-Body Connection

Combining physical activity with creative expression creates a powerful developmental experience. Young people learn that their bodies and minds work together—that physical skills require mental focus, and that creative thinking can solve physical problems.

This integrated approach helps young people develop a holistic sense of competence. They're not just "good at sports" or "artistic"—they're capable people who can learn, adapt, and create in multiple ways.

The Importance of Community and Positive Role Models

Belonging and Connection

Research consistently shows that young people need to feel they belong to a community. A sense of belonging is associated with better mental health, higher academic achievement, and more positive social relationships.

The skateboarding community has a unique culture of mutual support and encouragement. When someone lands a trick they've been working on, everyone celebrates—regardless of how advanced that trick is. This creates an environment where young people feel accepted and valued at every skill level.

Positive Adult Role Models

Young people benefit from relationships with adults who demonstrate positive values and behaviors. These relationships provide guidance, support, and examples of what's possible.

Our programs connect young people with adult mentors from the skateboarding community who embody the qualities we want to nurture: persistence, creativity, encouragement of others, and a growth mindset. These mentors aren't just instructors—they're trusted adults who show genuine interest in young people's development.

Peer Support and Leadership

Relationships with peers are crucial during youth development. Our programs create opportunities for young people to support each other, work together on challenges, and develop leadership skills.

More experienced participants often become peer mentors, helping newer members learn the basics. This mentorship role helps young people develop empathy, communication skills, and a sense of responsibility to others. They learn that they have valuable knowledge to share and that helping others is part of being part of a community.

Breaking Down Barriers

In many communities, young people from different neighborhoods, schools, or backgrounds rarely interact. Skateboarding provides a common ground that transcends these usual social divisions.

At the skatepark, what matters is your willingness to try, your respect for others, and your attitude toward learning. These shared values create connections between young people who might otherwise never meet. These relationships help build more connected, understanding communities.

Our Commitment to Youth Development

SKATECUBE KIDS exists to provide young people with opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, creativity, and connection through skateboarding and creative activities.

We believe every young person has the capacity to grow and thrive when given the right support and opportunities. Our programs are designed to create environments where young people feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and discover their own strengths.

As a nonprofit organization, we're focused on impact rather than profit. Every decision we make is guided by one question: How does this support youth development and community wellbeing?
